Barrow and District WI
Barrow and District is a small, friendly group who meet up on the first Tuesday of every month. Most months we have a speaker, with the exception of July and December.
In July we have a summer ‘event’. This could be a meal in a local pub, a BBQ in a member’s garden or maybe an outing. In December we usually have a Christmas meal.
As well as the monthly meetings many of us attend the regular events offered by our area Federation, Suffolk West. This could be a hands on craft day, a seasonal meal, topical discussion, scrabble or bridge – the list is endless. Also this year we are in the planning stage of two summer trips and a monthly lunch club.
We try our best to produce a varied program for the year in the hope that there will be something to suit everyone. Our meetings begin with the business for the month, informing members of local and federation events that are planned.
We then have our speaker/demonstrator, which is followed by tea/coffee and delicious home made refreshments which the WI is so famous for. We finish the evening with a raffle and sometimes a quick light-hearted quiz before wending our way home at about 9.30.

Wildlife Conservation Group
As a result of recent surveys within the Parish to stimulate interest in local voluntary groups in our community, several members of Barrow and Denham villages have decided to form the “Barrow & Denham Wildlife Conservation Group”. It has been formed in recent months and is still in an informal developing stage.
Its plans are to incorporate the following interests noted in the parish survey that people had for :
- Environmental projects
- Hedgerow surveys
- Nature reserve
- Bat & Bird boxes
- Wildlife Group
A local resident, Chris Curtis has very kindly offered to donate approx 2 acres of land for developing as a local small nature reserve. The site is the area of scrub and trees between St Mary’s Church and Denham Road.
The Group wishes to develop the site as a nature reserve for the interest and education of all the community. This involves work parties to clear pathways and clearing the pond area and other activities to make it more attractive to wildlife.
Two successful work parties have already been held ; 11 people attended the last one. Some of the pathways have already been cleared as well as part of the pond and all attending felt pleased with the progress.
All are very welcome to join the group! Any volunteers for work parties or any participation/ideas for future events would be much appreciated.
